Report: Leafs and Penguins talking trade?

The latest from Penguins insider Dan Kingerski.

If anything has become clear through the Toronto Maple Leafs' first 14 games this season it's that the team is relying far, far, faaaar too heavily on goaltender Jack Campbell to win them games.

Campbell has started a league leading 12 of the Leafs' 14 games to start the season and has an absolutely remarkable 1.90 goals against average and .936 save percentage. Both stats rank third in the entire league behind the Calgary Flames' Jacob Markstrom and, ironically, Carolina Hurricanes and former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen.

As good as Campbell has been though, the Leafs can't rely on him to keep this up over the long haul, especially when you consider that Campbell has never played more than 31 games in a season over the course of his NHL career. Petr Mrazek, of course, was signed to back up Campbell and provide a bit of a 1A/1B tandem, but has been limited to just a game and a half due to injury. He's been out of action since late last month with a groin injury and he's expected to be out at least another another 3-4 weeks while he recovers. In the meantime, Campbell has 23 year old Joseph Woll backing him up. Needless to say, Leafs GM Kyle Dubas would be wise to survey the trade market for a cheap back up option until Mrazek is back in the lineup.

Pittsburgh Penguins reporter Dan Kingerski reports that the Leafs could have interest in 29 year old AHL starter Louis Domingue as a potential back up for Campbell. As fate would have it, the Penguins have a desperate need for help on the blue line and the Leafs just happen to have defenders Travis Dermott and Travis Holl on the trade block. Could a Domingue for Holl swap be in the cards?

From Kingerski's most recent column for Pittsburgh Hockey Now:

Holl, 29, is an affordable minutes eater with a right-handed shot. He won’t light up the scoreboard and isn’t a hammer, but he is physical, and brings size. At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, Holl can clear a path near the net and block shots, which the Penguins lack even with a healthy roster.

An interesting Penguins trade chip who could interest Toronto (as one of multiple assets headed that way):goalie Louis Domingue. Penguins prospect goalie Filip Lindberg was the AHL goalie of the month in October, and Toronto is currently using Joseph Woll, who routinely ranks at the bottom of the AHL in save percentage, as their backup for the next four weeks while Petr Mrazek deals with another injury.

While this trade might make sense in the short term for the Leafs, I can't see them trading Holl away for a journeyman AHL goaltender. I could, however, see Domingue coming over for Holl as part of a package. Maybe package up Domingue with a pick or prospect for Holl? Thoughts, Leafs fans?
