Rumor: Leafs may lose Jack Campbell to a Canadian rival.

Deja vu for the Maple Leafs.

There are still 11 days in which the Toronto Maple Leafs could find a way to work out a deal with veteran goaltender Jack Campbell but, according to most pundits in and around the National Hockey League, the situation between the two parties appears to be trending towards a divorce.

Although many fans in Toronto may have already resigned themselves to the fact that Campbell likely won't be on the team come next season, this latest bit of information from Elliotte Friedman may be a little too much deja vu for them to handle. The NHL insider revealed on his most recent podcast that he believes the Edmonton Oilers could once again swoop in to snatch up a pending free agent that the Maple Leafs simply cannot afford to re-sign.

"The more I'm wondering, by the way, if Jack Campbell in Edmonton is a fit. I'm beginning to think that more and more," admitted Friedman on the most recent 32 Thoughts podcast.

One of the reasons that Friedman is beginning to suspect that a marriage between Campbell and the Oilers could work out is due to the current status of veteran goaltender Mike Smith. According to Friedman, there's a chance that Smith's career in the NHL could be over.

"I don't think [Mike] Smith is coming back. It might be an LTIR as opposed to retirement. But I am beginning to wonder more and more if Campbell and Edmonton is a fit," said Friedman.

Friedman's co-host asked the insider about what kind of money Edmonton would be throwing Campbell's way in order to entice him as a free agent, but Friedman deflected the question and reiterated his belief that Campbell and Edmonton might be a fit for one another.

"I don't wanna predict numbers, I don't know that yet," said Friedman. "You start to kind of put things together and wonder... and I'm beginning to wonder if Campbell and Edmonton is a fit."

This of course mirrors the situation that the Maple Leafs went through just one year ago with pending free agent forward Zach Hyman, an incredibly popular player in Toronto at the time. Unfortunately for the Leafs they were unable to retain the forward which worked out nicely for the Oilers who signed him to a 7 year contract at an average annual value of $5.5 million per season.

If Friedman's instincts are correct, we may soon see the Oilers do something similar with current Maple Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell.
