Rumor: Marc-Andre Fleury headed to Edmonton?

Fleury may get a shot on a contending team.

The Chicago Blackhawks have had about as rough of a start to a season in the National Hockey League as one could imagine, and as a result there is already talk around which players are likely to be traded this season.

The name that is perhaps at the very top of that list belongs to veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. In spite of his struggles with the Blackhawks this season the reality is that Fleury remains the reigning Vezina Trophy winner and many teams around the league still consider him to be a very capable goaltender. Over 10 appearances and 548 minutes of hockey Fleury has recorded a 3.50 goals against average and an .897 save percentage, and while those numbers may have caused a few teams to reconsider it is clear he is still drawing interest.

On the most recent episode of his podcast, NHL insider Chris Johnston strongly hinted at the fact that the Edmonton Oilers may be in the market for Fleury.

"I think it is reasonable to link Marc-Andre Fleury to Edmonton," said Johnston on the podcast. "I'm not saying it's happening, but we're at a point with Marc-Andre Fleury... I think it is fair to say that at this stage of his career that Marc-Andre Fleury doesn't want to play on a 2 win Blackhawks team."

Unsurprisingly, Johnston believes that Fleury is interested in capturing another championship.

"He wants to win another Stanley Cup and there are only so many teams we can say are cup contenders that need a goaltender, there's more than Edmonton but there's not a lot of them," added Johnston. "I think there's enough smoke... it's like two people looking at each other across the room, they don't know that its gonna happen but its not crazy to suggest that it might go that way."

Johnston actually believes the Oilers will look to make a pair of moves in season. While he doesn't hint at who the other target might be, it seems he is confident that Fleury could be the goaltender the Oilers are looking for.

"I just think that [the Oilers] understand what this season means and I see them trading for a D before the deadline and I see them getting another goaltender. And that goaltender might be the reigning Vezina Trophy winner," said the insider in conclusion.
