Rumor: Marc Bergevin expected to quickly move up the ranks of the Kings organization.
Bergevin already has a plan in place.
It did not take long for former Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin to find himself a new role in the National Hockey League, and by the sound of things he's got a pretty solid plan all laid out ahead of him for the foreseeable future.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles Kings announced that they would be adding Bergevin to their front office staff via their social media. According to the official announcement from the Kings' department of public relations, Bergevin is expected to take on a role as senior advisor to current Los Angeles Kings general manager Rob Blake.
It would seem as though both the Kings and Bergevin have their sights set on bigger things in the immediate future, with reports coming out of Montreal indicating that there may already be a multi year plan in place for the former Habs general manager. A report from Martin Leclerc of Radio Canada has indicated that Bergevin is expected to be named assistant general manager with the Kings once the season has come to a conclusion, although he did not elaborate on why he was not immediately put into that role. It could be as simple as Bergevin needing time to finalize his affairs on this side of the border before picking up his life and moving to Los Angeles to join the Kings.
Leclerc also reports that this decision came from Los Angeles Kings team president Luc Robitaille, with Robitaille reportedly asking Canadiens owner Geoff Molson for permission to speak to the former Habs general manager at some point early last week. That permission was obviously granted and it seems this deal came together rather quickly following that.
The fact that this move wasn't made by Rob Blake himself will no doubt raise a few eyebrows and could even lead to speculation that Bergevin could serve as a potential replacement for Blake down the line, but I genuinely do not believe that to be the case. Being general manager of the Canadiens clearly took a toll on Bergevin during his tenure, and I suspect that he will relish being able to take on a less forward facing role with the Kings moving forward.
