The Toronto Maple Leafs were given quite the scare on Saturday night when not one but two of their top forwards were knocked out of the game after blocking a shot.
The biggest scare of the night came after Maple Leafs star forward Auston Matthews was forced to retreat to the locker room after taking a shot off the leg, but thankfully Leafs fans were able to breathe a sigh of relief when Matthews returned to the bench roughly midway through the second period.
Unfortunately the second incident proved to be of much greater concern.
In the second such incident of the night, Leafs forward Ryan O'Reilly was injured when he blocked a shot with his hand. O'Reilly would be forced back into the Maple Leafs locker room like Auston Matthews before him, but unfortunately in this case O'Reilly would not return to the bench before the conclusion of the game.
There is obviously quite a bit of concern around the Maple Leafs big deadline acquisition as a result of this, and unfortunately the comments from Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe following the game aren't going to be reassuring anyone.
Keefe revealed that he did not immediately have an update on O'Reilly's status, never a good sign, and added that the Leafs would know more on Monday. This would appear to be an indication that O'Reilly will need to undergo some tests before the Leafs know the extent of the damage, again something that is never a positive sign.
Hopefully the next update from the Leafs will be more positive, as fans are no doubt already having flashbacks to the Nick Foligno trade back in 2021.
