It has been confirmed that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has been ruled out for Saturday’s matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Crosby has been working his way back from wrist surgery he had on Sept. 8, returning to the ice for practice on Oct. 9. While he has been seen practicing and skating with teammates, the superstar himself revealed more details about his injury and it does sound like fans will be forced to wait for his return longer.

Crosby made it clear to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he hasn’t participated with any force on injured wrist yet — face-offs, lifting stick, battling, etc… - all very important parts of his game.

“When I can do that comfortably, without pain, that will be a big step.”

The captain also revealed that his wrist has been injured for quite some time, which makes this an aggravated ailment. He explained that his left wrist was initially injured by Ryan Reaves seven years ago. “He’s been managing it through various means, including a scope last season, before ultimately opting for surgery just over six weeks ago.”

He finally decided to undergo surgery to see improvement for the remainder of his career.

“I’m hoping it improves it a lot. This last year — with the scope and just dealing with it — it became more of an issue. Hopefully, it can feel a lot better here and I can kind of put it behind me.”

The Penguins’ infirmary is quite full as of late with not only Sid out of action, but also star forward Evgeni Malkin, Bryan Rust and veteran forward Jeff Carter, who tested positive for COVID-19. While goalie Tristan Jarry was also placed on protocols, it was confirmed on Friday that he tested for a false positive.

In 55 regular-season games last year, Crosby led the Penguins with 62 points, scoring 24 goals and assisting on 38 others. He was held to one goal and one assist in Pittsburgh’s six-game loss to the New York Islanders in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Penguins and fans cannot wait to have him back though it sounds like there’s a lot more recovery time ahead for the captain.
