Report: Carey Price on his way to trade block amidst Habs’ rebuild

Could the full rebuild take place now and Price be moved to contender?

Some many changes are taking place in Montreal and this is only the start for the Canadiens, who are now focused on finding a new GM to replace Marc Bergevin, who was fired over the weekend as Jeff Gorton was named Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations of the Habs.

This means that more changes will be coming and got Pierre LeBrun wondering if it could mean a blockbuster trade involving star goalie Carey Price, who has yet to skate with his teammates since his return to the team on Nov. 8 after spending 30 days in the NHL/NHLPA’s Player Assistance Program for treatment related to a substance use issue.

Price, who skated solo earlier this week, was very close to former GM Bergevin, and LeBrun explained on last night’s edition of Insider Trading on TSN what could happened with the star goalie with the arrival of Gorton in Montreal:

“It’s going to be one of the great moments, I think this season guys, when Carey Price is healthy and back and to see the Bell Centre react to his return. But, bigger picture, longer term, what about his future with the Montreal Canadiens? There’s a new person running the Montreal Canadiens we know in Jeff Gorton. Carey Price was very tight with Marc Bergevin, everyone knows that. He’s 34-years-old. Where does a 34-year-old future Hall of Famer fit in the plans of a rebuild, if that’s what Jeff Gorton plans to do. They’re teams around the league, some contenders, I can tell you already that are intrigued to find out where that all goes. He has a full no-move. We know that he waived for the Seattle expansion draft. That was a very specific circumstance, so that Jake Allen wouldn’t get taken. But, I will say this: it’s all about him getting healthy and back on the ice, but longer term, closer to the trade deadline, perhaps the off-season, I think an interesting conversation perhaps to be had there between Gorton and Carey Price’s camp.”

For example, the Edmonton Oilers, who have not made it past the first round of the postseason since the addition of Connor McDavid could be looking for a massive upgrade in net - would they be interested to know where Price stands with the rebuilding plan in Montreal?

I feel like everyone - not just rival teams - are wondering…
