The Stars put their Assistant Captain on waivers!

The NHL waiver wire has some intriguing options today with Dallas Stars assistant captain Blake Comeau at the very top of the list.

While the Stars have struggled out of the gate with a 4-6-2 record, I don't think anyone could have foreseen the team giving up on a veteran leader like Comeau so early in the campaign. I mean, the guy wears an "A" on his jersey after all! How can you just toss one of your captains on the waiver wire like that!?

In any case, Comeau is indeed on waivers and joining him is teammate Tanner Kero and the Nashville Predators' Rocco Grimaldi.

Check it out:

Frankly, I could see all three of these guys getting picked up for a fresh start elsewhere. Personally, I hope that Comeau does indeed get claimed because it would be an absolute shame to see him waived and then demoted down to the AHL to finish off his career. The 35 year old grinder has never been a flashy player, but he's been a heart and soul, do whatever it takes kind of guy  for 15 years in the NHL. He's played over 900 career games split between the Stars, the Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames and New York Islanders. He put up a respectable four goals and 14 points in 51 games with the Stars last year and was a big part of the reason the Stars were able to reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2020. Again, here's hoping he finds a home elsewhere in the NHL.

As for Kero and Grimaldi, the two forwards have bounced between the NHL and the AHL over the course of their careers, playing for different organizations. Neither player is likely to be an impact guy at the NHL level, but they can provide some depth on the third or fourth lines and give any team an injection of energy. Kero's career best season came in 2016-17 with the Chicago Blackhawks when he put up six goals and 16 points in 47 games, while Grimaldi's career best season came just two years ago in 2019-20 when he put up a stellar 10 goals and 31 points in 66 games for the Predators. Any takers?
