Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin’s season ended abruptly last year when he was injured by Dallas Stars’ Jamie Benn. On Tuesday ahead of the first game between the two teams since the accident, and a reporter made it sounds to Benn that Larkin could seek payback. This is how the conversation took place:
Q: “Do you expect anything tonight from Larkin? Jamie Benn: “No. Why?” Q: “He was pretty upset last year after his injury.” Benn: “We’ll see."
Larkin was cross-checked in the back of the neck by Benn while looking down for the puck after a face-off in Detroit’s loss to Dallas on April 20. Larkin, stunned, fell backward to the ice, then crumpled up in pain. It’s an ugly play to watch.
While the star forward didn’t need surgery, he had to wear a neck brace for over a month Benn wasn’t penalized on the play, and he didn’t face discipline from the league.
Weeks after the incident took place, this is what Larkin told reporters: “I was upset when it happened, obviously was pretty hurt. You could call it a hockey play, I don’t really ever see a time in a game where I want to cross-check someone while they’re down.”
Let’s see if the reporter was right to ask the question and if we see Larkin attempt some type of revenge tonight.
