The Chicago Blackhawks shook things up on Tuesday as Stan Bowman officially stepped down as general manager and president of the team in the wake of an independent investigation into allegations that a then-assistant coach sexually assaulted two players in 2010.
The report, called “disturbing and difficult to read” by CEO Danny Wirtz, was handed over to the NHL. The league fined the Hawks $2-million for “inadequate procedures and mishandling” of 2010 sexual assault.
With the shakeup internally, changes will be coming to the organization and on Tuesday night, Darren Dreger shed some light on who might be coming up to help management and revealed some potential candidates to take over as GM in Chicago:
“I’m sure the Wirtz family wants time to digest and let things settle down a little bit. They named Kyle Davidson the interim general manager. But you look at the transition phase of the Chicago Blackhawks and it reeks of needing experience and there are some experienced general managers, former general managers available. Jimmy Rutherford is well rested, he’d prefer to be the president of hockey operations, but would take a GM job for the right fit. Jeff Gorton, formerly of the New York Rangers, you’ve got Ray Shero as an experienced GM as well. Not to mention there will be a long list of guys who believe they should be on that list of candidates, but that will come in time.”
There is still a lot to handle in Chicago after yesterday’s report on the sexual abuse case and we just hope the victims are doing well and that changes will come so that nothing like this ever happens again in the NHL.
