A great start to the season may have just been completely derailed.
It was a horrible scene for every hockey fan on Friday night when one of the National Hockey League's very best goaltenders, New York Rangers star netminder Igor Shesterkin, had to be helped off the ice by his teammates.
Shesterkin suffered a terrible looking injury a little less than midway through the second period of a matchup against the Washington Capitals, and there was no one but Shesterkin himself to blame for this unfortunate outcome. During a Capitals scoring chance, Shesterkin came well out of his net in an attempt to cut off any scoring angle for Capitals forward Pierre-Luc Dubois but he would also throw out a pokecheck that left him well out of position. Shesterkin would then race back towards the net and slide his right leg across the crease in order to get back into position as quickly as possible.
The momentum of Shesterkin's charge to the net would prove disastrous, with his right foot slamming against a post that not only didn't come off its moorings, but didn't seem to give at all. Shesterkin's skate bent as his foot slammed into the post, and that appeared to be the source of the injury.
Shesterkin writhed in pain inside his net and it would be a long time before he made his way off the ice. Even then Shesterkin was carried away with the help of his teammates and appeared to be unable to put any weight of any kind on his injured right leg/foot.
Although Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan had no update to offer following the game, he did express his worry over what transpired during the game.
"It's concerning, obviously," admitted Sullivan after the game. "He's an elite goaltender and you never wanna see anybody get hurt but obviously he's an important player for us."
Sullivan made no effort to shy away from how bad this could be for the Rangers.
"He's a big part of this team without a doubt, I've said it on so many different occasions he's one of the best goalies in the world if not the best, he's that good."
The Rangers entered last night's game with a record of 4 wins and just a single loss on the season, but despite being tied 1-1 prior to Shesterkin's injury, they would succumb to the Capitals by a score of 3-1 without Shesterkin and earned just their second loss of the season.
