A horrific update from the New York Rangers on Saturday.
The 2026-27 National Hockey League season will, for the most part, be played without one of the most dominant goaltenders in the world on the ice.
On Saturday, the New York Rangers confirmed everyone's worst fears when they officially announced that goaltender Igor Shesterkin will miss the rest of the season as a result of the injury he suffered on Friday night.
Shesterkin suffered the injury in a freak scenario that unfortunately is one that could have been avoided. After Shesterkin came well out of his net, and attempted a pokecheck to get the puck off the stick of Washington Capitals Forward Pierre-Luc Dubois, he found himself well out of position. Shesterkin tried to quickly slide back into position but when he did so his right leg got jammed against the post.
The post did not come off its moorings as you would normally expect in a scenario like this, and in fact barely moved at all, which is without a doubt what caused the injury to Shesterkin.
A truly devastating update for the Rangers who lose a man that is inarguably their most valuable player on the ice.
