EDITOR'S NOTE: This is an update to our earlier reported story on Minnesota Wild prospect Filip Johansson.
UPDATE: Wild insider Michael Russo has confirmed that the team will indeed NOT sign Johansson to a contract, meaning that they'll receive a compensatory 2nd round draft pick in this offseason's Entry Draft.
For our earlier report on this developing story, read below.
The NHL's deadline to sign unsigned prospects from the 2018 NHL Draft is tomorrow and all eyes will be on Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin. That's because the Wild have yet to sign 22 year old defenseman Filip Johansson after selecting him 24th overall in 2018. If Guerin can't get Johansson signed by midnight tonight then the Swedish blueliner will re-enter the NHL draft where he can be selected by any other NHL team. Should he go undrafted, he'd become an unrestricted free agent.
Johansson is the only 1st round draft pick left unsigned from that draft class, but there are two 2nd round selections who could join him as a free agent. Albin Eriksson of the Dallas Stars and Jacob Olofsson of the Montreal Canadiens are both top 60 picks who could re-enter the draft, as well.
Here's the full list of players slated to re-enter the draft:
As for Johansson, he recently signed a two year extension with Frolunda in Sweden so it doesn't look like he has much interest in an NHL career.
