A brutal season for the Blackhawks continues.

The Chicago Blackhawks have had some absolutely horrendous luck when it comes to the injuries they have had to deal with during the 2019 - 2020 National Hockey League regular season, and believe it or not things are still getting even worse.

According to a breaking news report from Chicago Blackhawks insider Mark Lazerus of The Athletic, the Blackhawks have now officially announced two more season ending injuries on top of the ones they were already dealing with. Lazerus reports that on Saturday the Blackhawks officially confirmed that both forward Andrew Shaw and forward Zack Smith would be shut down for the remainder of the season due to their injuries. The news regarding Shaw does not come as much of a surprise given the fact that he has already been out of the lineup for months now. Shaw was injured all the way back on the 30th of November during a matchup against the Colorado Avalanche, although I suppose there was still hope he could have returned prior to today's announcement.

The injury to Smith on the other hand comes as a total surprise given that there seemed to be no news at all regarding a back injury, the cause of today's season ending announcement. The Blackhawks had recently announced that Smith would be out for up to 10 days as a result of a cut that he suffered to his hand, but now we have learned that the 31 year old veteran will require season ending surgery. According to Lazerus' report, smith will have his season ending back surgery on Friday, and we will likely have a better idea of the time frame for his recovery once he has undergone the procedure to correct the damage to his back.

Smith played a significant role in the Blackhawks line up this season, appearing in 50 games for the organization and recording 4 goals and 7 assists for a total of 11 points and a plus minus rating of +2 over that stretch of play. Shaw of course played a much more minor role given how early his injury occurred during the season, he appeared in 26 games for the Blackhawks picking up 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 points and a plus minus rating of -4.

The Blackhawks had of course already lost Brent Seabrook and Calvin de Haan for the season, making this a pretty rough run of injuries for them.
