Breaking: A blockbuster trade has been made on Sunday.

It appears that Eric Staal is officially headed to the Big Apple.

According to TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, a deal is in place that will send the longtime Canes' captain to the New York Rangers.

McKenzie is also reporting that Staal has waived his full no-move clause to allow the deal.

Staal was taken out of the Hurricanes lineup prior to the teams 3 P.M matchup against the St. Louis Blues.

The trade has yet to be officially announced, but at this point it seems to be only a matter of time.

Staal, who has been with the Hurricanes since being drafted second overall in 2003, has scored 10 goals and 33 points in 63 games this season.

The 31-year-old centre has a cap hit of $8.25 million and a salary of $9.5 million this season.

Staal has been the Hurricanes since the 2010-11 season and sits second goals, assists and points in franchise history, only behind Ron Francis.In 909 career games, Staal has scored 322 goals and amassed 775 points.

He won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006 and an Olympic gold medal at Vancouver 2010.

McKenzie also believes that the Hurricanes will get two 2nd-round picks and Finnish prospect Aleksi Saarela in return for Staal.

The Hurricanes will retain 50 percent of Staal's salary from his expiring contract.

This may well be the biggest trade we will see prior to the NHL Trade Deadline on February 29.
