Breaking: Athanasiou saga coming to an end

Free agent Andreas Athanasiou and the Detroit Red Wings have been in an endless impasse, creating loads of tension.

But it appears to be coming to an end…

According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, who spoke on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960, a decision between both parties will be made in the next 24 hours. 

"I think we’ll get some closure on Athanasiou, finally, in the next 24 hours. Whether he signs a one-year deal in Detroit or he goes and plays overseas with an out clause, I think he’s going to sign because he’s got to play one way or the other," explained Friedman on the air. 

Athanasiou has been skating in Switzerland for the last few weeks, but has yet to sign a contract there. He could sign with a Swiss team but with an out clause to return to the Wings before Dec 1. 

If not signed before December, Athanasiou will not be able to wear an NHL uniform this season.

No matter what he chooses, it seems it will be very soon...
