According to NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun the Dallas Stars finally got their man. Acquired from the Los Angeles Kings earlier this week, the Stars have locked up goaltender Ben Bishop to an astounding six year contract worth $29.5 million.

Take a pause. Read those numbers again. Six years and nearly $30 million! That’s quite a commitment to make for a goaltender who struggled to keep the starting position with a very good, but injury riddled, Tampa Bay Lightning team. Also, keep in mind that Bishop’s is 30 years old. His new deal won’t expire until he’s 36 and, given his injury history, that could be problematic for the Stars.

In any case, Bishop is certainly an improve over the goaltending the Stars have had in recent years. The duo of Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi combined for the second worst GAA of any pairing in the NHL and most analysts believe that poor goaltending was ultimately the downfall of the Stars this season. Look for them to be much improved next season and potentially push for a return to the postseason.
