It sounds like National Hockey League superstar Erik Karlsson has made up his mind.

Over the weekend Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman dropped a huge nugget of information when he revealed that the San Jose Sharks had made Karlsson a massive contract offer. According to Friedman the offer would not only make Karlsson one of the NHL's highest paid players, but was a deal that might even exceed the mega contract given to Los Angeles Kings superstar defenseman Drew Doughty.

From Friedman's 31 Thoughts:

We are getting close to clarity on Erik Karlsson and San Jose. The Sharks have worked this hard. It is believed they’ve made him an offer that will challenge, if not surpass, Drew Doughty’s extension from last summer. Three weeks ago, I thought Karlsson was going back east for family reasons and a travel schedule that’s easier on the body. San Jose needs a decision, conversations have intensified, and I think they’ve got a shot.

Although that was merely a rumor at the time of Friedman's report, it now seems very likely that the Sharks did in fact approach Karlsson with a large offer designed to convince him to avoid going to unrestricted free agency. A breaking news report from TSN National Hockey League insider Bob McKenzie on Monday morning seems to corroborate the earlier report from Friedman, as according to McKenzie it now appears that Karlsson remaining in San Jose is a forgone conclusion. McKenzie would not go so far as to say it is a done deal, but it is clear he believes Karlsson will remain with the Sharks, and if McKenzie says it you know you can take it straight to the bank.

"All signs are pointing to Erik Karlsson returning to SJ and re-signing with the Sharks, which would take the most prominent name off the 2019 UFA board," wrote McKenzie on Monday.

Listen if you're a Sharks fan you're getting one of the best defensemen in the world long term, and that alone should give you a reason to celebrate. That being said Karlsson's past few seasons have been marred by serious injuries and if this deal does indeed rival the one given to Drew Doughty it may be one that comes back to bite the Sharks down the road if Karlsson can't stay healthy.

Update: NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has just shared some stunning details regarding Karlsson's new deal.
