Despite being bounced by the Anaheim Ducks in a four game sweep during the first round of the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs, Calgary Flames fans still have something to cheer for these days. That’s because the team’s captain, Mark Giordano, has been nominated for the NHL’s Mark Messier Leadership Award at this summer’s annual NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“A bit of a shock, but I’m incredibly honored,” were the comments from Giordano when he learned of the news. Giordano will be up against fellow captains Nick Foligno and Ryan Getzlaf for the award that recognizes “an indivusal as a superior leader within the sport, and a contributing member of society.”

Named for legendary NHL superstar Mark Messier, the award carries on Messier’s legacy as one of the NHL’s all-time greatest captains and leaders both on the ice and off the ice. It remains to be seen whether Giordano will take home his first piece of NHL hardware, but you can be sure that Flames fans will be pulling for their captain.
