This one comes as a big surprise.

There was no indication that former first round pick Barret Jackman was planning to retire, but according to an official announcement from his former team, the St. Louis Blues, that is exactly what he intends to do.

Jackman had signed with the Nashville Predators, but early this summer the Predators opted to placed him on unconditional waivers for the purposes of buying out his National Hockey League contract, and Jackman was either unable or unwilling to find a new team to play for this season.

The defenseman's career has spanned 14 seasons, good for 876 NHL games which include 29 career goals and 157 career assists.

According to the Blues the announcement will be made on Tuesday.
