The much maligned former head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers organization has found himself a new home.

According to an official announcement from the Toronto Maple Leafs organization the Leafs have hired Dave Hakstol as an assistant coach. Hakstol will join head coach Mike Babcock's team for the 2019 - 2020 National Hockey League regular season, a move that will mark just his second stint as a coach in the National Hockey League.

Hakstol was of course recruited out of the University of North Dakota, where he had previously been the head coach for a whopping 11 years, by then Flyers general manager Ron Hextall. Hextall stood behind Hakstol in spite of the fact that the Flyers were outright terrible under him at times, but there have since been rumors that the coach was subjected to micro-managing on the part of Ron Hextall. Those are of course only still just rumors, but given that Hextall was shown the door in spite of some smart moves on behalf of that organization it does not seem too far fetched.

The former Flyers head coach expressed excitement about his chance to work with some of Toronto's talented players.

"I'm excited to have the opportunity to join the Maple Leafs coaching staff," said Hakstol. "I look forward to building relationships with the players and getting to work with the entire group."

It is unclear at this time exactly what role Hakstol will fulfill on Mike Babcock's team.
