One New York Rangers top D-man expected to out tonight due to injury

The New York Rangers will be without their captain and their number one defenceman tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins as Ryan McDonagh sits out with an undisclosed injury.

The Rangers return to Madison Square Garden tonight after two tough losses in California against both the Anaheim Ducks and the San Jose Sharks. McDonagh has had another strong season with the Rangers this year and it appeared as though he might eclipse his career high of 43 points set in 2014-14 before his most recent setback. As it stands, the 27 year old blueliner has 40 points in 76 games with 37 penalty minutes for 2016-17.

Currently, there’s no timetable for McDonagh’s return to the lineup but Rangers head coach Alain Vigneault described the injury as day to day. “It’s nothing serious, but after discussing things with medical staff everyone felt it was better to keep him out of tonight’s game”, was the exact quote from the Blueshirts bench boss.

Regardless of whether the injury is minor or not, the fact that the Rangers will be without arguably their best player as the team is jockeying for playoff position down the stretch should be of great concern to the team’s fans
