Breaking: Sakic's price for Matt Duchene is “steep”

“steep” might even be short of what it really is.

There's a lot of teams who still believe in their playoff chances, but the Colorado Avalanches aren't one of them. Joe Sakic wants to take advantage of the situation where there's few sellers for the number of buyers and ask a boatload for his trading chips.

Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch writes that if the Avalanche are going to deal Duchene, not only will Sakic want a top-four defenceman, a top prospect and a No. 1 pick in return, the indications are there has to be more in the deal for Colorado.

Pierre Dorion, Ottawa Senators' general manager, is one of the GM that kicked tire on Matt Duchene and Martin Hanzal, although Dorion said he's not going to enter the dance if he thinks the price is too high. The Senators are still blossoming and it might takes more than a player to become a Stanley Cup Contender.

While no one knows exaclty what was the Senators' price for Duchene, Bruce Garrioch believes it could look like this: Cody Ceci (top-4 defenceman), Thomas Chabot (Top prospect) and a first round pick or Colin White (former first round pick).

Sakic is in full-rebuild mode and if he can pull something like this, the Avs are going to be fun to watch before long.
