Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has just broken a record set by one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

According to an official announcement from the Penguins organization Crosby has just become the all time leader in terms of games played for the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. Crosby now has a whopping 916 games played in a Penguins uniform, which is good for sole possession of first place, surpassing the previous record by a single game this evening.

The previous record was set by none other than National Hockey League legend Mario Lemieux so although fans will likely be estatic that Crosby has set the franchise record it will likely also feel bitter sweet because of the man that he has surpassed to claim that record. There's little doubt that Lemieux is the most beloved player in the history of the Penguins franchise and for my money's worth is the best player I have ever personally witnessed play the game live and many fans will have liked for him to retain pieces of his legacy like this record.

Now to be fair to Lemieux here his career was cut short by a host of medical issues so you have to wonder just how many more games he could have played had he been blessed with good health throughout his entire career. That being said the fact that Crosby has been so durable in spite of often being the target of opposing team's also speaks to what a tough customer he has been throughout his career. His level of durability should add to this record and not detract from it, and it will no doubt do so as he continues to add games to his current total.

Lemieux now sits second all time in games played as a Penguin with 915 and is trailed by another current Penguins star in the form of Evgeni Malkin. Malkin's 834 games in a Penguins uniform have already allowed him to path Jaromir Jagr who sits in 4th place with 806 games played and it is not crazy to think that he may one day also surpass Lemieux himself should he be able to remain healthy.

Congratulations to Crosby on this amazing accomplishment.
