A major trade was in the works through the last week of 2017, and it finally transpired on New Year's Day.

Los Angeles Kings' star prospect Gabe Vilardi and New York Rangers prospect Sean Day were traded from the Windsor Spitfires to the Kingston Frontenacs in the Ontario Hockey League.

The mega deal saw 16-year-old Cody Morgan traded back to Windsor for a 2nd round pick in 2020, their 2nd round pick in 2022, their 2nd round pick in 2024, and their 2nd round pick in 2025. They also added their 3rd round pick in 2020, 3 conditional selections in 2023 (3rd round) and 2027 (2nd round) and 2028 (2nd round) of the OHL Priority Selection draft.

Vilardi was an 11th overall selection in 2017, and Day was picked at 81st overall in 2016. While Vilardi is a sure bet to be a mainstay on the Kings' roster down the line, Day's future is potentially bright, but uncertain. He was a highly-touted prospect going into his draft year but his stock dropped as his progress stalled.

This trade was clearly a sign that Windsor is looking to restock the cupboards, as they acquired 8 picks through the next 10 years.
