Breaking: The Flyers have re-signed well-rounded forward to contract extension.

The Philadelphia Flyers have made their decision on Michael Raffl.

According to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun, the Flyers have re-signed the Austrian forward to a three-year, $7.05M contract extension. The extension will reportedly count as $2.35 million per year against the salary cap.

The 27-year old would have been an unrestricted free agent July 1, which led to speculation that the team might attempt to trade him prior to the February. 29 NHL Trade Deadline. The team opted to re-up solid possession player, who is well rounded enough to play a bottom six role, while filling in on the Flyers' top two lines.

Raffl has appeared in all 61 games for the Flyers this season, tallying eight goals and nine assists.

A player like Raffl would have been difficult to replace for Philadelphia, and the team was willing to reward him with a cap-friendly extension rather than attempt to acquire a player of his skill-set on the free agent market.

The Flyers seem content with hanging on to a player who is good defensively, drives puck possession, and can take on a scoring role if there is hole in the top six.

Keeping Raffl in Philly may pay big dividends for the team down the line.
