The Detroit Red Wings have been searching for consistency since the beginning of the 2016-2017 regular season schedule. With a 8-7-1 record, they currently find themselves 16th overall across the National Hockey League, and ninth in the Eastern Conference. They are fifth in the Atlantic Division with 17 points, tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning who have a game in hand.

During the preseason, fans and experts were pointing to a relatively weak blue line that required bolstering if the Red Wings intended on making the playoffs for a 26th consecutive season. When veteran defenseman Niklas Kronwall began skating with the team a few short weeks ago, it seemed as though there was a division amongst fans concerning his role.

After recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him for months, Kronwall began playing last week. Unfortunately, he was nowhere to be found this morning during the team’s training session, which could indicate that he is either taking a maintenance day or has aggravated his injury.

The same goes for Andreas Athanasiou, who was placed on injured reserve last week due to a knee injury. He should reportedly be back within the next two to three weeks.

We’ll know more shortly.
