Breaking: Veteran defenseman unlikely to re-sign, will be traded.

This could turn out bad for his general manager.

It sounds like we can expect at least one more big trade this season.

Sportsnet insider John Shannon was a guest on Sportsnet 650 when he was asked about the future of veteran defenseman Erik Gudbranson and it doesn't sound like Shannon believes that future is with his current team.

"Benning will make decision in Feb. Won't go through Hamhuis situation again. Would be shocked if he re-signs in Vancouver," said Shannon.

Benning is of course a reference to Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning, the man who acquired Gudbranson in a trade and gave up 21-year-old center Jared McCann to do so.

Fans in Vancouver will be hoping for a big return for Gudbranson in a trade, however the veteran defenseman has not looked good during his tenure with the Canucks. His performance during the last two seasons have likely diminished his value and making matters worse for Benning is the fact that McCann has 5 points in 8 games for the Florida Panthers.
