A National Hockey League veteran has suffered a major injury while preparing for the 2017-2018 season.

On Thursday the New Jersey Devils revealed that sometime last week veteran center Travis Zajac suffered a torn pectoral muscle on his left arm while training, and today he underwent successful surgery to repair the injury.

The real bad news for fans of the New Jersey Devils and fans of Zajac is that his recovery time is expected to be extremely lengthy, with the Devils announcing that they expect him to be out for anywhere from four to six months with the injury.

That means Zajac won't be ready to return until well into the NHL season, something that will undoubtedly hurt the Devils hopes of making the playoffs this season.
