Chiarelli's best move as an Oiler may have been the trade he rejected.

Chiarelli's decision very popular in hindsight.

In his short time as general manager of the Edmonton Oilers Peter Chiarelli has made a number of notable moves to improve his team, but it may be the move that he didn't make that will earn him the most praise in the long-run from the Oilers faithful.

This summer rumors began to circulate regarding a possible trade of P.K. Subban out of Montreal and while he eventually went to Nashville the Oilers were the original rumored destination for Subban when the rumor first surfaced.

It was eventually reported that the Habs wanted Leon Draisaitl and Edmonton's 4th overall pick in the 2016 National Hockey League Entry Draft, and according to the Edmonton Journal at that time a survey showed that 72% of fans were in favor of making the move.

Of course we now know that Draisaitl has appeared in 46 games for Edmonton this season accounting for 17 goals and 22 assists and the Oilers went on to draft Jesse Puljujarvi fourth overall and he remains in their system. Subban on the other hand was injured this year and as only appeared in 29 games for the Predators, and the team struggled even with Subban healthy.

The deal never came to fruition and according to some of those same Oilers fans who initially wanted the deal, declining was the correct move to make. A more recent poll now shows that an overwhelming 95% of over two-thousand people polled agree with Chiarelli's decision to decline the Subban deal just a few months after the initial poll.

Chiarelli's decision to make no move at all may go down as one of the most universally well-received decisions of his tenure as Oilers GM.
