There was a rather surprising rumor earlier this week suggesting that Detroit Red Wings' forward Andreas Athanasiou could be leaving for the Kontinental Hockey League, and now that rumor has gained a lot more traction.
According to KHL insider Aivis Kalnins, not only is the Ak Bars Kazan interested in signing the 23-year-old forward, but two more Russian organizations have also expressed interest:
It’s no secret that Wings general manager Ken Holland hasn’t had much success in contract negotiations lately. The Wings roster is riddled with bad contracts to players like Justin Abdelkader, Darren Helm, Danny DeKeyser, Niklas Kronwall and Jonathan Ericsson.
