Every year EA Sports has the unenviable task of ranking every single player in the National Hockey League on a scale from 1 to 100 for their annual game in the NHL series of video games.
Now you might be thinking to yourself, 'it's just a video game what's the big deal', but players and fans alike have both been known to give the developers of this game a ton of grief when they get a ranking that they deem to be unfair. Although that certainly can't be a lot of fun for the developers, the flip of side having so many people that are so passionate about the product that you design is that it lets you have a lot of fun with it as well.
As a result EA Sports has begun making a spectacle of their rankings, announcing them gradually over time and quite frankly generating a lot of positive discussion about how players should be ranked when compared to their peers on opposing teams. This time around EA has unveiled the identity of their top 10 highest ranked goaltenders for NHL 21, the latest video game in the franchise. Now some players on this list were given equivalent ratings, but for whatever reason EA Sports has chosen to rank some above the others, although they did not go into any great detail as to what may have served as a tiebreaker.
Here are the top 10 courtesy of EA Sports NHL:
I can already tell you that due to recency bias alone there are going to be some fans that will be very unhappy with this list. I also think it is safe to say that EA Sports NHL has received a ton of flack for their picks on this top 10 list but once again at least they are creating discussion among NHL fans, which I think is a lot of fun for everyone involved.
I'm sure many, if not most, of you will also have your own fair share of disagreements with the choices put forth by EA Sports today. Let us know in the comments which goalie you feel was the biggest snub from this list.
