Things are quite different for former NHL player Patrick Berglund in Europe.

We never really learned what the catalyst for the whole situation was but we would eventually learn that Berglund had made the difficult decision to walk away from the Buffalo Sabres organization while still very much under contract with them as he ended there after the Ryan O’Reilly move to the St. Louis Blues. It was reported that the forward suffered from depression and needed to leave the NHL, and now he feels way better, especially after what has just taken place in Sweden.

According to the Complete Hockey News, Brynäs IF of the SHL have signed Berglund to a two-year contract, thanks to their fans. That’s right, it has been reported that the “signing, along with the signing of defenseman Simon Bertilsson, was made possible after over 5000 Brynäs supporters came together to raise 2.1 million Krona (~$232,070 USD) in 9-days.”

Last season, Berglund posted 17 goals and 14 assists in 49 contests with Djurgardens IF, and sure made an impression on Brynäs IF and its fanbase.

The move to get Berglund on the team roster would have been impossible if it were for the fans and we hope the veteran forward will prove to them he was worth it.

As a fan, would you be willing to fund the signing of a player to come to your favourite club?
