There is a very big name rumored in the hunt for the Buffalo Sabres vacant general managers position.

While he has not been in the National Hockey League for three years now, Sportsnet insider John Shannon is reporting that former Vancouver Canucks general manager Mike Gillis is on the list of candidates for a job with the Buffalo Sabres.

While Gillis had an unceremonious exit in Vancouver, he orchestrated some big moves that were a big part of why the Canucks had an extremely competitive roster under his tenure. Those moves earned him the first ever general manager of the year award and many have believed it's only a matter of time before he gets another job in the NHL.

No word from Shannon on how close Gillis is to actually getting the position.
