Flames turned down two major trades during quiet deadline...

Everyone expected the Calgary Flames to be an active buyers at the trade deadline after many NHL insiders reported that the Canadian team could use some boost up front for the upcoming playoffs. However, it seems like Flames general manager Brad Treliving is trusting the current group of players he has to be able to go a long way into the postseason. 

"Just because your next-door neighbour buys the big car, if you can’t afford it, you don’t get the big car. That’s just the way it works, commented Treliving to the Calgary Sun. 

“When you try to keep up with the Joneses just for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses, the bank comes and takes it from you at some point.”

The big car Treliving is talking about is Mark Stone. Wes Gilbertson reports the Flames were linked to right-wing Stone prior to the Ottawa Senators shipping him to the Vegas Golden Knights, but Treliving wasn't willing to pay the price for a simple rental. 

"The Flames refused to bid farewell to one of their blue-line blue-chippers and weren’t keen to surrender a first-round selection in exchange for a rental."

As you all know, the Golden Knights acquired forward Mark Stone from the Senators in a deal for defensive prospect Erik Brannstrom, forward Oscar Lindberg and Dallas’ second-rounder in 2020. On top of that, Stone revealed that he and the Golden Knights had agreed to an eight-year extension. TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reported that the deal is for $9.5 million per season, but the deal cannot be completed until Friday.

TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun also reported that a deal with the Minnesota Wild fell through on Monday. The Flames were reportedly "really, really close" on a deal to land Jason Zucker ahead of Monday's deadline but the trade fell through. LeBrun believes neither team is believed to be pleased that the deal did not go through, though it remains unclear exactly why.

The Flames made only one acquisition at the deadline: the 27-year-old depth defenseman Oscar Fantenberg in return for a conditional fourth-round pick in 2020.

Quiet. 

However, it does not mean that Treliving's group isn't ready for the postseason. 

“You always want to come into the deadline when you’re in the position that we are and try to help your team. But there is a limit, too. We were not going to sit here and for very short-term help impact the long-term of this team.

"We like our group. If we could give ’em more, great, but it wasn’t at all costs. So I’m not necessarily surprised and I’m certainly not disappointed. I really like the group we have.”
