Despite a mid-season ten game winning streak, there wasn’t much to cheer for as a fan of the Philadelphia Flyers this season. The team will miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third time in five seasons and often times look further away from a competing than they have in past years. In other words, the team appears to be trending in the wrong direction.

There is, however, a silver lining for Flyers fans and that’s the play of the team’s rookies this past season. Rookies Ivan Provorov, Travis Konecny and Jordan Weal all looked good in their inaugural campaigns and the Flyers farm system in Lehigh Valley is stocked with young players ready to make an impact next season.

Forwards Konecny and Weal both looked good up front for the Flyers, but the real excitement for the future of the franchise is at the blue line. With Shayne Gostisbehere already a revelation and Provorov stepping in to play big minutes, the team boasts a bevy of defensive prospects including Samuel Morin, Travis Sanheim and Robert Hagg.

“"All three kids are doing very well," Flyers’ general manager Ron Hextall said. "They're different players, all three of them, and they've all come a long ways. I look at Hagger and he's come a long ways. Travis, from October to now, [is] night and day, and Big Sam has continually gotten better in his two years. Those kids, we're thrilled with all three of their development."

Whether the Flyers are able to ice such a young defence corps next season remains to be seen, but after years of futility on the blue line it appears the Flyers are finally developing quality players on defence. Players that will play a big part in whether or not the team improves next season.
