ICYMI: Sens pull off two trades, get Stepan, Paquette and more

In case you missed it yesterday, the Ottawa Senators acquired veteran forward Derek Stepan from the Arizona in exchange for a second round draft pick.

"Derek's acquisition provides us with important stability at centre heading into the season," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. "He plays a 200-foot game and has proven to be a reliable special teams' player throughout his career. His addition to our lineup will also represent a valuable leadership presence within our group."

The team followed that up with yet another deal today, acquiring forward Cedric Paquette, defenseman Braydon Coburn and a 2nd round draft pick from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Marian Gaborik and goaltender Anders Nilsson.

The Lightning announced that Gaborik would be placed on long-term injury reserve immediately, effectively making this trade a salary dump for the team. The Lightning essentially traded Paquette and a 2nd round pick in exchange for a back up goalie and about $4.1 million in cap savings.

Looking at things from the Sens' perspective, they added Stepan and Paquette for essentially nothing. Not a bad little bit of work from GM Pierre Dorion.
