Insider suggest the Capitals should be “trying to find a dancing partner to see if there’s a good trade,” for Ovechkin!

Another postseason failure could lead the Capitals to do the unthinkable.

The Washington Capitals are technically still very much in the hunt for a Stanley Cup Championship, however after a tough loss in Game 4 against a severely depleted Penguins line up, some are already predicting the worst.

TVA Sports Renaud Lavoie was a guest on the Jeff Blair Show on Sportsnet 590 the Fan, and given Washington's now long-list of playoff disappointments, Lavoie wondered if it may not be time for the Capitals to consider trading their captain.

"I know he’s got a strong relationship with the owner Ted Leonsis, I understand that," Lavoie said. "But at one point for that franchise, I wonder if they’ll think about the unthinkable, which is trying to find a dancing partner to see if there’s a good trade."

For a well-respected insider like Lavoie to make such a statement, especially when you consider he is not prone to hyperbole, is an indication that there really is a sense the consistent postseason collapse from the Capitals is starting to weigh on the franchise.

"I’m not talking trading Joe Thornton to San Jose for, you know what, not a lot," he said. "I’m thinking about a big trade that’s going to be help two franchises. Is it possible, is it feasible in the cap era? I don’t know. But they need to think about that, because they have so many good things. They have unbelievable players.”

Lavoie believes that Ovechkin's lackluster performance in the postseason may have reached a point where the Capitals are forced to make a tough decision, and while he hopes the team can still achieve success, it's clear he feels this is a crossroads for the organization.

“Hopefully it’s not over for them," he said. "Hopefully it’s not over for Alexander Ovechkin. But I wonder what’s going to happen next. I think we’re there.”
