Johnny Gaudreau doesn’t understand why New York Islanders got mad at him during last Saturday’s game against his Columbus Blue Jackets. He was booed every time he touched the puck.

We all remember when Gaudreau left the Flames to sign as a free agent with the Blue Jackets and there were rumours that the Islanders might have been in the mix and a possible and logical destination for Johnny, who was looking to get closer to home.

However, the Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello never called Gaudreau. That’s what the top forward revealed after the game this weekend.

“I was talking to my coach after the third shift, and I was like, ‘I don’t get it,’” Gaudreau told ESPN. “I didn’t talk to [the Islanders] once throughout the whole free agency.”

Lamoriello was heavily criticized throughout the summer when he not only failed to sign Gaudreau as a free agent, but also missed out on the trade opportunity for Matthew Tkachuk, who landed in Florida, and the chance to sign Nazem Kadri as a free agent, who went to Calgary.

Fans were expecting the summer to be busy for the Islanders and Lou, but no move came.

Looking at the standings this early in the season, it does not seem to be such a bad thing for Lamoriello. The Islanders currently sit second in league standings with 26 points.

However, can you imagine what the roster would look like if Gaudreau had gotten a call from Lamoriello this summer? Who knows?

It’s easy for Gaudreau to say that he does not regret choosing the Blue Jackets despite the team’s poor start, but he might be thinking how better the view would be on top with the Islanders if an offer had come from Lou.

The Blue Jackets are currently 31st in the entire league…
