The NHL has no clue when action will resume after it has paused the 2019-20 season due to the coronavirus outbreak, but it has made it clear that two things remain crucial in their process moving forward.

As NHL insider Elliotte Friedman points out in his latest 31 Thoughts column on Sportsnet, the NHL is set on respecting two important targets when it comes to resuming play.

“Okay, so when it comes to the possibilities for playing again, here are a couple of things that are important to the NHL: 1) awarding a Stanley Cup this year, and 2) ensuring a full 82-game season next year. As we sit here on March 18, we have no idea if these things are going to be possible, but those are the targets.”

We don’t know when players will get back on the ice - if they will need a short training camp - and how many teams will take part into the playoffs, however, it seems like for now the NHL does not want any decision on the 2019-20 season to affect the following campaign.

It will be interesting to see when NHL action can resume and how these two targets will be the main focus on what the schedule will look like.
