NHL team likely to cut ties with injured veteran.

It sounds like a catastrophic injury to a veteran forward could result in him soon playing for a new organization. 

On Monday it was revealed that New York Islanders forward Nikolay Kulemin would miss the next 6 months after having surgery to repair an upper-body injury, and now it sounds like that may be the end of him as an Islanders as well. 

Andy Graziano of Sportsnet New York is now reporting that unless Kulemin is willing to accept a significant discount on his next contract, we may have already seen the last of Kulemin in an Islanders jersey.

The 31-year-old forward is currently making $4,187,500 per season on his current contract, a big chunk of change for a man who has only broken the 30 point mark once in his last four National Hockey League seasons. 

The Islanders have recently bolstered their offense so it makes Kulemin's large cap hit even more expendable than it would be under normal circumstances, and the team may be looking ahead to where they could use the cap space this summer. 

That being said there's no doubt Kulemin is a serviceable NHL forward, and it seems likely that he will be signed quickly after his contract with the Islanders expires.
