We’ve heard of different teams looking to tank for projected first overall pick Connor Bedard before the 2022-23 NHL season got underway. It now appears that one particular club could have the plan set to land Bedard, especially as we witness his impressive run at the 2023 World Junior championship.

According to TSN’s Eric Macramalla, the Canadiens, who are likely be near the bottom of the NHL standings near the end of the campaign, should do this to get best chances to win the draft lottery and get Bedard in Montreal.

“If the Canadiens want to have a legitimate shot at Connor Bedard, Hughes needs to start by trading Allen and Edmundson – and then others. Bedard represents a unique opportunity for the Canadiens to turn things around and sustain success over a decade. Oh – and score goals.”

Talks are heating up now that we are all on the Bedard record watch three games into the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship. The young phenomenon has six goals and 14 points through Canada’s first three games and is on pace to break Peter Forsberg’s record for points in a single tournament, should Canada reach the medal round.

He is also just six points away from becoming only the seventh player in tournament history to reach the 20-point mark. And he is closing in on becoming the only Canadian player to ever top 18 points in a tournament. Dale McCourt (1977) and Brayden Schenn (2011) both sit at 18 for the most-ever by a Canadian.

Can you blame the Canadiens for looking into dropping everything and landing the kid to build a better future in Montreal? The Habs could have already begun the plan as they currently have won just one of their last eight games.

As the trade deadline grows nearer, maybe Macramalla’s plan for the Habs will come true and we could see them land Bedard in the summer with back to back first overall picks… who knows?
