The Washington Capitals will officially play their home games at Capital One Arena in 2017-18. This after a name change due to a lapsed agreement in sponsorship rights that saw the building once known as Verizon Center and, before that, MCI Center.

The news had been rumored for weeks, but wasn’t officially confirmed by the team until early this morning. Currently, the building’s re-branding seems to be the only in the NHL for next season, but with how often arenas change names it can be hard to keep up! Of course, the Red Wings will open Little Caesar’s Arena in Detroit in 2017-18, after nearly 40 years at Joe Louis Arena.

Capital One Arena opened as MCI Center in December, 1997 and currently acts as the home arena for the Capitals, the NBA's Washington Wizards, Georgetown University's men's basketball team and the WNBA's Washington Mystics.
