To say that the New Jersey Devils haven’t had the desire start to the 2019-20 NHL season would be an understatement. To say that they are worried about slow contract negotiations with star forward Taylor Hall is putting it lightly.

It is clear that the Devils are hoping to sign Hall long term, however, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has pointed out some interesting facts about the franchise that could lead to a major turnaround in this situation.

The Devils are sinking early in the season, so much that they have already made a coaching change, adding assistant GM Tom Fitzgerald on the bench next to head coach John Hynes.

GM Ray Shero took on a huge gamble this offseason, adding P.K. Subban and Wayne Simmonds to his roster, and this kept his reputation alive as a general manager who isn’t afraid of taking risks and blockbuster deals. He knows that Hall is hoping to stay with a team that can make the postseason and clearly that message hasn’t been sent by the Devils.

Friedman wonders if Shero could go ahead and pull a blockbuster trade, sending Hall away for a great return. On a segment on Tim and Sid, Friedman went a step further, explaining how the Edmonton Oilers, Hall’s former team, would be going hard at their former first round pick if a trade were to take place.

“It would not surprise me if Edmonton was a big suitor here… ”

The general manager, Peter Chiarelli, who traded Hall to New Jersey isn’t at the reigns anymore in Edmonton and the city would love nothing more than to have him back!

Let’s see how the Devils make out in the coming weeks and if Shero decides to once again make a blockbuster deal!
