The Oilers lose a player on waivers after he is claimed by a rival NHL team.
The Edmonton Oilers have lost one of their depth forwards, and to make matters worse they have lost that player for no return whatsoever.
On Sunday, the Oilers made the move to place 27 year old forward Noah Philp on waivers, likely hoping to send him back down to the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League, however that won't be happening. That is because on Monday, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news that the Carolina Hurricanes have submitted a claim for Philp, poaching him from the Oilers in the process.
Philp had appeared in 15 games for the Oilers this season and had 2 goals and 1 assist to his name for a total of 3 points.
In our coverage of Philp being waived on Sunday I speculated that he was the kind of player teams would take a chance given that he is a very low risk type of acquisition. Philp is currently on an expiring contract, a one year deal, and is earning a league minimum salary of $775,000 which makes him easy to fit under the cap.
An unfortunate outcome for the Oilers but one that was likely necessary given the roster issues the Oilers are currently facing.
On the other hand for Philp this may actually be a welcomed move as he may have a better chance of cracking the Hurricanes lineup. The Oilers are getting healthy and the talk around the team is that they will be moving forwards out, via trade or otherwise, to make room.
