Plenty of action around the NHL today.

This just in, the Edmonton Oilers have placed defenseman William Lagesson on waivers, while the Tampa Bay Lightning Lightning have placed forward Gemel Smith on waivers.

Meanwhile, Cam Dineen of the Arizona Coyotes and Alex Belzile of the Montreal Canadiens have both cleared waivers and will be sent to the AHL.

The biggest name up for grabs is undoubtedly Lagesson, a 25 year old defenseman whom the Oilers drafted in the 4th round (91st overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. The big Swedish defenseman has skated in 10 games for the Oilers this season, chipping in two assists. He's played 37 games over three seasons for the Oilers and... well... frankly he's been pretty ineffective. I'd be surprised if another team ends up taking a chance on him even if he is a freebie on the waiver wire.

As for Smith, he's no stranger to the NHL waiver wire. It seems like he comes across the wire at least a couple times a season and has bounced aroudn the NHL quite a bit the past few years. He has suited up for the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins and the Lightning in the NHL and the Texas Stars, Providence Bruins and Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. He's skated in just five games for the Lightning this season, but has been relatively productive with three assists and 11 penalty minutes. He has 12 goals and 24 points in 88 NHL games over seven seasons.
