When it comes to the Stanley Cup playoffs, Alex Ovechkin just can’t catch a break. Despite scoring a goal and imposing himself as an offensive threat all evening, the superstar was bested by Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby once again. Crosby one-upped Ovechkin with a 2 goal performance and a series opening victory in game 1 of the Washington Capitals versus Penguins second round playoff series.

The frustration that Ovechkin felt was written all over his face during post game media interviews and the outspoken captain didn’t mince words when describing how the game went. “No penalties against their side. Sometimes shit happens. You just have to fight through it and put it back in,” he said with a drab, monotone delivery.

While it’s clear that Ovechkin isn’t happy with the game’s result, it’s unusual for him to use an expletive when addressing the media. He’s a 12 season NHL veteran and is very aware of the power of his language, so there may an intended purpose behind his choice of words. Calling out the officials? Calling out his teammates? If so, he’s chosen a fairly passive-aggressive approach and it will be interesting to see how the Capitals respond for their crucial game 2 matchup.
