Patrick Roy responds to rumors of secret meetings with Geoff Molson.

Is Roy the next GM of the Montreal Canadiens?

For some time there have been rumblings about the future of current Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin. Many pundits appear to believe that the longtime Habs GM is playing out the final year of his contract with the intent of departing from the team when that contract has expired, and as a result there have been all kinds of rumors floating around about the situation.

One of the biggest rumors surfaced last weekend when, in French language publication Voix de l'Est, journalist Danny Gelinas linked Montreal Canadiens legend Patrick Roy to the Canadiens GM job. Not only was Roy brought up in the context of the questions surrounding Bergevin's future, but Gelinas would go a step further by indicating that Roy had already met discreetly with Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson at the Hilton Hotel in Quebec City.

That news certainly turned some heads, and as you would expect it was not long before Patrick Roy himself was asked about the clandestine meeting with the Canadiens owner. Roy was asked exactly that this week during an event for the Quebec Remparts, a team with which he serves as both head coach and general manager, and in his answer he appeared to squash the rumors completely.

Roy began by joking about the choice of Hotel in the report. The Canadiens legend said that if there had been a meeting it certainly would not have been at the Hilton but would more likely have been held instead at the upscale Le Capitole Hotel in Quebec City. That was however where the laughter ended for the former Habs legend.

The legendary netminder proceeded to get much more serious and would go on to deny just about every aspect of the rumor.

"No," said Roy. "I have never met with Geoff Molson."

Roy would then go on to criticize the report, suggesting that discussing the topic wasn't worth his time.

"They are false rumors," said Roy. "It's not even worth talking about it."

Some fans have pointed out that Roy did have something of a sly smirk on his face when making the comments, and it's true that he did, but that is no way an indication that he was being deceptive here. Unless we get something more to go on with this particular rumor, you can consider this one dead in the water.
