The National Hockey League Entry Draft has likely just been shaken up.

According to a report from Corey Pronman, expert on NHL prospects for The Athletic, it appears that 18 year old forward Peyton Krebs has been seriously injured. Pronman's sources have reportedly informed that Krebs has suffered a torn Achilles while training during the offseason, a major injury that will almost unquestionably impact his draft stock moving forward. Krebs was projected to go in the first round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft however this injury means he will likely be out until at least early 2020, if not even longer than that, and with that long of a layoff due to injury you can expect NHL organizations to shy away.

Krebs has spent the last 3 seasons of his young career playing in the Western Hockey League, all of them with the Kootenay Ice. During the 2017 - 2018 season he appeared in 67 games, recording 17 goals and 37 assists for a total of 54 points over that season. His totals would increase significantly the following year with 19 goals and 49 assists for a total of 63 points, this time over just 64 games. That is what landed him on the radar of several NHL teams and that is why many outlets had him going within the first 15 picks of the upcoming draft.

In fact many mock drafts had him going just outside of the top 10 to either the Philadelphia Flyers at the #11 spot or to the Minnesota Wild at the #12 spot, however that now seems extremely unlikely given the latest news about his injury. It is important to note here than Pronman is reporting that Krebs could be back "early in the season" which may soften the hit he takes in the draft, but this would also appear to indicate that the injury may have occurred some time ago. If Krebs has indeed suffered a torn Achilles, and it has happened in the last several days, it seems unlikely that he would be able to return before the calendar turns to 2020.

Stay tuned for more updates on Kreg's status moving forward, but I imagine those will be few and far between over the course of the summer.
