Edmonton Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli recently met up with TSN insider Pierre LeBrun at the NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo earlier this week and the two talked about superstar Connor McDavid’s future in Edmonton.

It’s a foregone conclusion that the Oilers will look to lock up McDavid long-term, but what’s less clear is the dollars required and McDavid’s willingness to commit to the city. Ditto for Draisaitl. The young German was a revelation for the Oilers this year, with or without McDavid, and figures to be a fixture of their offense for the next decade plus.

When asked about signing both McDavid and Draisaitl, Chiarelli was blunt in his reply, “Well… we’re going to sign them. Those are priorities. We have to take care of these guys first.” When pressed for further details however, Chiarelli put up a brick wall, saying “We’re in negotiations, but I’m not going to get into specifics.”

While Chiarelli was light on the details, Oilers fans can take some comfort in knowing that there’s absolutely no way he’ll allow McDavid and Draisaitl to play for any other team but the Oilers.
